Deliberate Vocabulary Guide

An online vocabulary trainer that schedules review by the forgetting curve, free to use. Entry point: /english/home.

Before you begin

No account needed to try - open /english/login and click "guest mode". Register when you want to keep going (scores, word books, and badges all follow an account). Note: Deliberate Vocabulary runs its own account system, separate from the main site - you register for it on its own (the difference is laid out in the Accounts & XP guide).

Study Center

The home page is a dashboard - four cards tell the whole story:

  • Today's accuracy - the percentage you got right today
  • Words learned - your lifetime total
  • Due for review - how many words are due right now
  • Current level - your vocabulary level

In the middle sits "Start today's study" showing today's planned word count; below it a row of shortcuts: drilling, quick listen, word books, mistake book, review, stats. A bar chart shows the week's progress.

Studying words

Click "Start today's study" and each word walks through three steps:

  1. Pick the meaning - choose from four options
  2. Guess in context - choose within an example sentence
  3. Spell it - type it from memory; the input auto-focuses

Misspellings don't cost experience; the word just goes straight to the mistake book. Finish a batch and click "Save and see results".

Review

The review schedule runs on the SM-2 memory algorithm: words you answer well stretch out to longer and longer intervals, while misses come back around quickly. Only due words appear under "review". Reviews are multiple choice, saved in batches once you confirm. Review matters more than new words - unreviewed vocabulary leaks away as fast as you learn it.

Quick Listen and Read Aloud

  • Quick Listen - hear a word, pick the right one, with looping or sequential playback. If there's nothing to listen to yet, it sends you off to study first
  • Read Aloud - hold to record, release to recognize, and get a pronunciation score; you can replay your own recording. You need an active word book first

Speed Review and the Mistake Book

Speed Review is perfect for a pre-exam sweep; misspelled words file themselves into the mistake book, which you can drill alone by setting the range to "error-prone". Mistakes are the fastest points on the board.

Word books

Managed under "My word books"; the market carries exam-prep books (middle school, high school entrance, and beyond), and you can build your own. Only one book is active at a time - studying, reviewing, and reading aloud all follow the active book.

Badges

Study behavior unlocks honor badges across four grades - foundation, advanced, high, and special. View them at /english/badges and wear an earned one on your home page. Badges are decoration only; they add no experience.

About your data

Study data follows your Deliberate Vocabulary account; guest-mode data lives in the browser and vanishes if you clear the cache. Account deletion lives in Settings - the data is erased for good, with no recovery.
