Three styles and how to pick a quality tier

Anime Photo: the guide
Turn photos into anime scenes with three styles to choose from, all processed locally in your browser - photos are never uploaded. Entry point: https://lab.stsqz.com/anime.
Three styles
| Style | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Makoto Shinkai | Unmistakable skies and light | Landscapes, streetscapes, skies |
| Hayao Miyazaki | Warm hand-drawn feel | Everyday life, plants, countryside |
| Portrait Anime | Face-specialized, cleanest results | Selfies, ID photos, busts |
The first two come from AnimeGANv2's public weights (the Shinkai and Hayao editions); Portrait Anime uses face-specific weights. Each style downloads about 8MB the first time, then caches automatically - styles don't interfere with each other.
Quality tiers
- Fast 256 - about 2-4 seconds per photo; plenty for everyday sharing
- Quality 512 - about 5-15 seconds per photo, with more detail kept; best on desktop
Output resolution always matches the original: the model reasons on a downscaled working size, then the result is scaled back up and composited. So the tier affects detail quality, not output size.
Tips
- For landscapes pick Shinkai - skies and clouds are where it dazzles
- For people, prefer Portrait Anime; the other two treat faces more impressionistically
- Profile views and occlusions (masks, sunglasses) weaken the portrait style
- Run one photo through all three styles and compare - there's often a surprise winner
Licensing
The Shinkai and Miyazaki style weights come from the AnimeGAN project (TachibanaYoshino) and are for academic and personal use only; the Portrait Anime style is MIT licensed.
