stsOS Station Tour

/stsos is the team's homegrown "browser desktop OS": it opens into a simulated computer with a desktop, a taskbar, and windows, and every app runs inside the page. It started as a practice project - from the first line of code in May 2026 to now it has iterated through 14 versions, all of them preserved and playable anytime.

The version museum

/stsos doubles as a version gallery: every release is a complete, enterable system, arranged chronologically from the first V0.1 to the latest V3.0.

Version Date Version Date
V0.1 2026-05-29 V1.5 2026-08-02
V0.5 2026-06-14 V2.0 Beta 2026-08-14
V0.6 2026-07-05 V2.0 2026-09-29
V1.0 2026-07-12 V2.1 2026-10-04
V1.1 Beta 2026-07-30 V2.2 2026-10-12
V1.1 2026-07-31 V2.5 2026-10-16
— — V3.0 2026-10-23 (latest)
  • V0.1 - where everything began; the original sketch is still visible
  • V1.5 Beta is deliberately kept in its broken state - it's part of history, and going in shows exactly how it broke back then
  • Comparing old and new versions side by side is a treat: watch the windows, icons, and interactions evolve in one sweep

What's on the desktop

Taking V3.0 as the example, the system ships with a set of built-in apps: Files, Terminal, Notes, Sketchpad, a music player, clock, calendar, settings, and more. Windows drag and resize, and the taskbar behaves like a real OS. There's also an external app manifest (calculator, text viewer, JSON viewer, Wikipedia) that the system fetches online and loads on demand.

The Terminal deserves a special visit - it's the team's toy shell; type a few commands and see what happens.

How to play with it

  1. Start in V3.0 and poke every app once
  2. Then step into V0.1 to feel the original sketch
  3. Work through the middle versions in the museum and trace half a year of iteration in one sitting

Everything runs locally, no account needed, and you can't break anything. Want context for each release? Cross-check the dates above against the changelog - it's a fun pairing.
