Retro TV Handbook

/player is a player that greets you as a vintage CRT television: the Piko Theatre auto-plays, and the AV channel hides 18 arcade games. Everything runs on a keyboard remote - this page explains every key.

Powering on and changing channels

Open /player and the TV powers itself on into the theatre. Three ways to change channels:

  • Click the screen - clicking the picture switches channels directly
  • Number tuning - press 1-4 to jump straight to the matching episode (P01-P04)
  • CH± and V± - the remote's channel and volume keys step through episodes

Left and right arrows move between the previous and next episode. Flip on the "AUTO" switch in the bottom right and episodes chain automatically; turn it off to stay where you are. When you're done, the TV supports standby and full power-off too - just use the power logic.

The program guide

The Piko Theatre is the TV's whole lineup, numbered from P01: the title-card test, Wild Fruit, Chasing the Wind, Fireflies. The guide strip along the bottom of the screen shows the current episode count and total runtime in real time. Press P (or the remote's P key) to jump back to episode one anytime.

The game deck: an arcade inside the TV

Press G or tune straight to the A-prefixed channel for the arcade lineup: 18 games - road racing, PONG, Snake, brick breaker, Tetris, Space Invaders, Flappy-style bird, Simon memory, Asteroids, the jumper, Sokoban, a platformer, star assault, 2048, Pac-Man-style maze, canyon flight, duck shooting, and a lunar lander. Inside the deck, A plus a number selects a game directly; the exact numbers are in the deck's own program menu.

  • AV switch - pressing AV mid-game jumps to the next game
  • P - pauses or resumes the current game
  • MENU - opens the game guide, all 18 in one place
  • Each game shows its controls on its start screen; arrows plus Space cover nearly everything, and a few games use the mouse or touch

Remote quick reference

Key Effect
1-4 Jump to the matching theatre episode
CH± Previous / next episode
V± Volume
←/→ Previous / next episode
P Back to episode one on TV; pause/resume in games
M / MENU Program guide
G Enter the game deck
F Fullscreen
T Test card (the kind only repair technicians love)
L Lights-out mode - everything but the screen goes dark
OK Confirm / enter

Two little easter eggs

T, the test card: pressing T shows the color-bars test pattern broadcast stations run after hours - pure decoration, nostalgia included.

L, lights out: pressing L kills the room lights, leaving only the screen glowing - evening viewing at full atmosphere. Combine F (fullscreen) with L (lights out) for your own private cinema.
