Background Remover: the guide
Upload an image and it keeps the subject while making the background transparent, outputting a transparent PNG. Entry point: https://lab.stsqz.com/rmbg.
How to use it
- Drop in or pick an image - jpg and png both work
- Wait for the model to load and run (about 7MB, first time only)
- Preview the result against the original
- Hit download for your transparent PNG
About the engine
It uses the MODNET portrait matting model, trained specifically on people - which is why edges around hair strands, collars, and glasses frames come out cleanest on photos of humans.
Getting good results
- Portraits work best; the model's edge handling is specially tuned for them
- The stronger the contrast between subject and background, the cleaner the edge
- Output size matches the original - resolution is never reduced
What it isn't built for
Objects, animals, and landscapes aren't its strength - you may get odd semi-transparent edges on anything that isn't a person. For object cutouts, do it by hand or pick a photo where the subject clearly separates from its surroundings.
FAQ
Raggy edges around hair
Give the output PNG a light inward shrink (to remove white fringe) in another image editor; the model only has so much strand-level precision.
The background won't come clean
Check whether the subject is too small in frame, or too close in color to the background. Crop tighter so the subject fills more of the picture - that usually fixes it right away.
